A&I Course Description

Rani’s Acting and Improvisation courses consist of fun, games and exercises designed to relax you and build your confidence using the fundamentals of Acting and Performing.

If you wish to practice your oral delivery, especially if you have never done this before, this is the workshop for you.

Just bring your favourite factual or fiction prose or drama pieces along (need be no more than two minutes each) to say or read to the rest of us.

Each week, we will build/improve your skills in Acting and Presenting. These will include where to put emphasis in a line, how to create variety in a piece with light and shade, posture, stance and projection.

The written or learnt pieces will just be tools to practice your skills on.

The workshop will also be a time to open up your imagination and play games with no limits, touching on the absurd. Each exercise, however, does have its own set of rules, such as focusing on the positive, avoiding conflict and melancholy aspects.

BBC Club Collaboration

As well as preferential rates on BBC Club's A&I courses led by Rani, BBC Club members will receive a 15% discount on Private sessions with Rani, with 20% benefits for block bookings.

About Rani

Rani Singh started off presenting and writing for Children’s TV on the BBC, for ITV and for C4. Credits include Play School, Rainbow (ITV), and Everybody Here, Michael Rosen’s Children’s series for C4.

After leaving school, she spent a short time on the Acting Foundation course at Questors Theatre in Ealing before winning a place at the Drama Centre, London.

Though she was thrilled to get into drama school, Rani chose instead to embark on a BA Performance Arts degree. At Middlesex University, she was taught by US Director/critic/playwright Charles Marowitz and James Roose-Evans, founder of the Hampstead Theatre. John Wright, Mime teacher, was also a big influence. Rani was in a talented peer group that included the founders of Trestle Theatre Company.

As the first South Asian to take the course, she was encouraged to study Sitar as her music option and Indian classical Dance alongside her major subject, Drama. Acting, Writing and Directing formed the foundations for her career in television and radio.

Rani was also privileged to be chosen by Vanessa and the late Corin Redgrave to perform at the Albert Hall and other theatres in London for Unicef and other charities.

Structured Improvisation was often a part of her Acting work.

In 2023 Rani started learning Unstructured Improvisation with Ant Griffith and his team at Questors Theatre in west London. Studying this form of play within a set of rules, she found it to be a useful tool that can be deployed in  different scenarios, and devised a course of six-seven sessions of Acting with Improvisation.
