About
Join Lizzie as BBC staff member and qualified Lowland Leader, Alice Whittle, will guide you through one of the Peak District’s most dramatic landscapes. This unforgettable route takes in the mysterious chasm of Lud’s Church and the striking gritstone ridge of The Roaches. Terrain: Expect some inclines, with a mixture of woodland trails and paved paths, which may be slippery and muddy in wet weather. Hiking boots with good ankle support and weather-appropriate clothing are strongly recommended. What to Bring: For a hike to Lud’s Church—especially if completing the popular Lud’s Church and The Roaches loop—it’s important to come prepared for muddy woodland paths, rocky uneven ground, and potentially slippery moss-covered sections. The gorge itself can remain cool, damp, and shaded even on warmer days. •Sturdy walking boots with good grip (trainers can be difficult due to mud and roots) •Waterproof jacket •Layers (it gets cooler inside the chasm) •Water •Packed lunch and snacks •Small backpack Lunch Stop: Midway through the walk, with a possible ice cream stop Facilities: Toilets are available at the start and end of the walk. Transport: This is a circular walk, so driving or car sharing is recommended. There is limited free parking available (approximately 25–30 cars), which fills quickly on weekends. Overflow parking is available in a nearby field for around £5 for the day. Children welcome when accompanied by an adult.
