Rambling July
About
A short circular walk over the South Downs from Hassocks, through Butcher’s Wood to visit both the Jack & Jill Windmills in Clayton. Jack, the black brick windmill, is privately owned but Jill is still managed by a trust and has an open day scheduled for 20 July from 2 - 5 pm. Jill is a wooden post mill built in 1826 and transported here by oxen from Dyke Road Brighton in 1850. On open days (recommended donation of £2 to visit) there is a souvenir and tea shop (cash only). On the way back we will pass Clayton Church with its very fine 12th Century wall paintings right round the church. Length: 3.5 miles. Difficulty: Moderate - hilly but gradual ascent to the windmill - paths consist of mix of woodland and trails and chalk paths -could be muddy if there has been a lot of rain.
